Location: Various locations in Freesia, especially the Park and Cathedral.

Summary: Most of Freesia is celebrating tonight. Ward off the darkness with lanterns and masks and maybe chat with the local light god.

In a change from their usual behavior, the citizens of Freesia are out and about during the night in order to celebrate another festival.

Called “Spooky Night,” the atmosphere of this holiday may seem familiar to some of Freesia's outsiders. Lanterns patterned after all manner of monsters and other creepy things are visible everywhere, resting on doorsteps, hung from trees, placed in windows, and there are smaller ones strung between buildings and across streets.

Equally creepy masks abound as well. They're mostly worn by the children, but some adults can be seen indulging as well, the eyes and mouths of their masks glowing like jack o' lanterns.

Most of the citizens seem to be enjoying themselves, chatting and laughing with one another, jumping around and trying to scare each other, drinking and buying snacks from opportunistic vendors. Many of the festive citizens have gathered at a bonfire in the park, but groups of people can be found just about anywhere tonight.

But despite the party atmosphere, you may want to pay close attention to the city tonight...

A: The masks and lanterns mentioned earlier aren't going to be hard to find. The lanterns are visible everywhere of course, and more can be found for sale in the shops and stalls, alongside a wide variety of masks. Most of the designs are generic monsters, such as ghost or skeletons or werewolves, but if you look around, well... Whatever you're afraid of, if it's something you can put a face or likeness to, you'll run into a mask or lantern of it eventually. Creepy as that might be though, anyone who dares carry or wear their fears will be rewarded with an extra bright glow emanating from it, something that may come in handy if they run into any of the Nox tonight.

B: If you head down to the park tonight, but stray away from the bonfire, you'll notice that the cathedral is active for once. A very small group of citizens has gathered there, primarily consisting of the elderly- and at least one person you may find familiar. There isn't any laughing or drinking going on in this part of town, and everyone in the cathedral is either silent or speaking to each other in hushed tones. As far as can be observed, they've gathered here to place candles and flowers everywhere.

C: Autumn isn't quite here yet, but the nights have been getting longer lately, the shadows deeper. Don't wander too far tonight and if you do, take care to bring some light with you. The Nox are especially active tonight and will happily attack anyone who wander into the shadows, local or not, not to mention breaking anything they can get their shadowy hands on. A few of the bolder groups will even stray to the edges of the festival in order to knock down the decorations. They're in a vicious mood tonight, but if you thought to pick up an especially spooky lantern or mask before confronting them, their viciousness will evaporate and you'll have them running scared instead.

"Don't you need magic for monster hunting?" She still hasn't actually mastered her abilities. She still isn't really sure what they are, either.

She's also still looking at the mask.

"How d'ya think I figured it out?" Casey casually leans on his stick. "Ya can't just sit around and wait for your magic to just show up! This is the perfect opportunity to go find it!"

Barbara finally glanced up from the mask. "You fought the shadows?" Did that work?

"Sure did!" Barbara's hit on one of Casey's favorite topics: himself, being awesome. He gets more animated as he talks, gesturing and posing like he's telling a grand epic on a stage.

"The shadows jumped my friends in the empty lot, right? So guess who comes bombin' in to save the day? I bolt to the portal, slam my hockey stick right in the middle, and suddenly it bursts into flames like a wick in a cherry bomb! It blows the thing apart and I realize 'Whoa, Casey Jones isn't a rad vigilante,' he's an even radder superhero!"

That might not actually be how it went, but it is how he felt, and that's WAY more important.

...Riiiight. She lifts an eyebrow. "Your power is flaming hokey sticks? That doesn't sound right."

Maybe she's just teasing a little, but she actually is a bit confused. Barb doesn't entirely understand how the magic works, or how to trigger it.

She really does want to know, though.

"Not hockey sticks! They just catch the best. And I already fought with 'em anyway."

Yeah, look at those spinning tricks. Are you in love with him yet?

"My bro, Wash? His started up when we were fightin' the Nox too. You just gotta get into the action and they'll spark up, yo!"

Well. That is pretty close to how she normally does things. Jump in feet first, and you'll figure things out one way or another.

Even if it's against her direct orders...

"So where are they?"

"Check it!" Casey jabs his thumb at the darkness outside the festival. He knows a thing or two about jumping in feet first, magic or no magic, and he's eager to get going.

And he's distracted her from the mask! Mission accomplished!

Right. That was the main mission. Not learning her magic...

"Lead the way."

Well, any mission is OK for Casey, as long as he gets to hit stuff. And he does, leading her outside the safety of the festival lights and into Nox territory.

"Well?" he says, grinning as he rolls up his sleeves, "Let loose!"

"With what?" On what? She looked around, searching for a target.

"Whatever you're feelin'!" Yeah, that was the problem, wasn't it? Casey had no answer for her, and can't have an answer without her giving him the answer...Hopefully, he can coach her into figuring it out.

...Somehow.

"I'm feeling ridiculous..." she muttered, glaring around. She needed some form of enemy, first of all. She'd work everything else out from there.

A small pair of white eyes popped open in the darkness. Casey jabbed his elbow at her and pointed in their direction.

"Hey, think this might be your chance!"

She moved into a combat position, meeting the eyes with he rown. "This would be a great time for some magic to ahppen..."

"Wait for it..."

This was going to happen, right? It's what happened every time. The monsters attacked, a big swell of magic, and then everything was cool.

...right?

Nothing was happening, so far. Unfortunately. The white eyes were getting closer, too, and she was getting nervous.
